Guide to GCSE Mathematics (Edexcel)

Mathematics is one of the core subjects of the National Curriculum and as such it is studied by every student in Years 10 and 11.

There are four main strands in the syllabus: Number and Algebra, Shape and Space, Handling Data and Using and Applying Mathematics.

This last topic is assessed by two investigations set by the board; the other topics are examined at the end of Year 11. The examination makes up 80% of the final mark with the remaining 20% gained from coursework.

The majority of you will be expected to enter for the highest level paper but there will be a small number for whom the intermediate level paper is more appropriate. The decision as to the level of entry will be made after consultations following the mock examinations.

Some of you may be entered for the GCSE examination at the end of Year 10. You will then take an additional Maths GCSE at the end of Year 11.
