About our schoolIntroducing the schoolGravesend Grammar School for Girls is a single sex selective Foundation School, conveniently situated close to the centre of Gravesend and with easy access to the A2. At the time of writing there are 950 girls on roll, with 210 in the Sixth Form, a teaching staff of 62 and a further 32 staff who support the daily running of the school. "A thriving school community... a friendly working environment." Through Adversity to the StarsThe school was founded in 1914 as the County School for Girls, taking its motto as "Per aspera ad astra" (Through adversity to the stars), and moved to its present site in 1926. The original building, with its bell tower, central quadrangle and walled playing fields remain today much as it was then, despite wartime evacuation, major fires and many extensions. For the twenty-five years prior to 1992 students were admitted at 13+ via the Thameside selection system. During this period the school was known successively as Gravesend School for Girls, then Gravesend Grammar School for Girls. In September 1992 the area reverted to 11+ selection and this expansion resulted in the acquisition of a second site and a major refurbishment programme. Building ProgrammeA subsequent building programme allowed the replacement of 'Mayfield', our Sixth Form centre, together with all our mobile accommodation, by a new teaching block providing classrooms for the Mathematics and Modern Languages Faculties, together with an Art Suite. Well-qualified, Experienced StaffThe school benefits from a loyal, stable, well-qualified and experienced staff who work together as a team. Staff-student relationships flourish in a relaxed and caring environment, where students are encouraged to achieve their full potential. The calm, friendly atmosphere, combined with acceptance of the need for hard work, provides a high success rate in public examinations. This gives the school its good reputation and continues the tradition of excellence, which began in 1914.
