About our school

The Gravesham Partnership :
16+ Age group Collaboration

For a few years now, several Gravesham schools have co-operated to provide different courses for their students. The schools have also collaborated with North West Kent College to provide vocational courses appropriate to 14 to 16 year olds. Now, Gravesham Headteachers want to move this collaboration further and have been discussing ways forward for over a year now.

Over this academic year, the schools within the partnership have been carrying out detailed planning to offer their students entering the sixth form (16+ age group) in September 2004 an extended choice of courses. This planning has involved not only the Headteachers, but various other appropriate members of staff within the schools.

What does this mean to your son or daughter? It means that if your child wishes to follow a particular subject as part of the sixth form study and it is not available at the school, it may be possible to pursue that subject at another school. It may also mean that if the combination of subjects selected by your son or daughter causes constraints, these may be resolved by following one of the subjects at another school.

Following a course at another school brings other benefits as well. It helps students to gain confidence by going to a different venue and mixing with new students. It means they have to be responsible for managing their time and different forms of learning whilst being exposed to a new environment. Their own schools would help and support them through their study in the sixth form, but some of these additional aspects would be seen as part of their preparation for the future.

How often would they have to go to the school and how would they travel? Students who attend a course at another school would attend twice a week - one morning and another afternoon. The Partnership Schools will be making arrangements for transport to be provided in order for students to arrive or leave the 'Away' school without it causing problems at their 'Home' school. The wish is that transportation should not be the reason preventing a student from following a course at another school. In some cases it may be that individual cases would have to be considered to solve problems of transport.

The eight schools within the partnership are :

Gravesend Grammar School
Gravesend Grammar School for Girls
Meopham School
Northfleet School for Girls
Northfleet Technology College
Saint George's Church of England School
St. John's R C Comprehensive School
Thamesview School

A list of courses on offer at each school and information about them is now available from your school. Students interested in these courses will have to talk to appropriate members of staff in their school so that 'applications' can be made on their behalf after relevant discussions. The Head of Sixth Form or Key Stage 5 Co-ordinator in your school will be able to explain how the arrangements will work in more detail.
