Guide to A Level Physical Education (AQA)
Minimum recommended entry requirements: Grade B in GCSE Physical Education or Grade B in Dual Science and English.
This course takes a multi-disciplinary approach, encouraging the development of different methods of enquiry drawn from a wide range of disciplines with the focal point being the performer and the performance. Theoretical and practical aspects are strongly inter-related.
Advanced Subsidiary (AS)
You will study two theory modules.
- Factors affecting performance – applied anatomy and physiology and acquiring, performing and teaching movement skills.
- Contemporary studies in PE and Sport.
These are examined by two theory papers of 1½ hours and 1¼ hours respectively.
You will also do a practical coursework module which is assessed in one individual activity and one game. You are required to do demonstration, observation and analysis in both activities. You will also create a personal performance portfolio, relating the theory to your practical assessment activities.
Advanced Level (A2)
You will study two more theory modules:
- Historical Studies and Psychology of sport and performance.
- Exercise Physiology and Synoptic assessment.
These are examined by two theory papers of 1¼ hours and 1½ hours respectively.
The practical coursework module is again assessed on one individual activity and one game. You will need to show effective performance and understanding of performance. You will continue your personal performance portfolio.
At present we offer these activities:
- Individual – Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Swimming and Trampolining.
- Games – Badminton, Hockey, Netball and Tennis.
There are other activities available on the syllabus which can be taken for assessment if you are involved in them out of school.
In both AS and A2 the theoretical aspects are worth 70% of the final mark and the practical assessments worth 30%, of which the portfolio at AS Level is worth 10%. The practical coursework is mainly undertaken in lessons but some assessments may be done out of school time e.g. at a local club where facilities are better.
We cover a wide range of skills. In the theory, we encourage independent thinking and learning. We use many different strategies, including practical investigations and student presentations.
Students normally have the opportunity to attend a three day revision course at Easter in the Upper Sixth, which costs approximately £50. There is also a trip to London museums for one day in the Upper Sixth, approximate cost £15.
PE combines very well with Human Biology, Psychology, Biology, Sociology and History. It also links with English.
Careers opportunities include:
PE teaching, degrees in Sports Science, Sports Studies, Leisure and/or Management, Physiotherapy, Sports Development and any other degree.
