Guide to GCSE Information & Communication Technology (Edexcel)
The Design and Technology Faculty will be offering a full course and a short course in Information and Communication Technology.
The main aim of the course is to encourage students to gather, store, process and present information through activities in a range of contexts.
You will:
- solve problems through the use of information systems and associated principles and techniques.
- have opportunities to design, implement and document information technology systems
- develop an understanding of the wider applications and effects of information technology.
The skills include Word Processing, the use of Databases and Spreadsheets, Desk Top Publishing and an understanding of the principles of Data Logging and Control.
For the full GCSE ICT course, students will produce four pieces of coursework contributing 60% of the marks towards the final grade. The final 40% of the grade will be determined by a 2½ hr written examination taken at the end of Year 11.
For the short GCSE ICT course, students will produce 2 pieces of coursework contributing 60% of the marks towards the final grade. The final 40% will be determined by a 1¼ hr written examination taken at the end of Year 11.
Success at GCSE can provide the opportunity for further study at A or AS Level. Students who think that they might want to pursue an A Level in this subject should consider taking the full Information Technology course.
