Guide to A Level Chemistry (AQA)
Minimum recommended entry requirements: GCSE Dual Science grade BB and GCSE Mathematics at grade B at the Higher Level.
Chemistry is the “why” science. Why do materials behave as they do? Why does changing one condition change the process of a reaction? etc. It is a practical subject: the emphasis is on finding out and understanding rather than being told to learn, although theory is also taught. A willingness to share ideas and participate in class discussions is also necessary. Chemistry is often challenging, sometimes explosive, usually smelly but always relevant.
Advanced Subsidiary (AS)
The AS course covers the basic concepts in Physical, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry. It introduces principles in a qualitative way and allows the student to develop an understanding of some of the factors which influence the properties of the world.
Advanced Level (A2)
The A2 course builds upon this, developing principles quantitatively and looking at their application in terms of social, industrial economic and environmental implications. Students will be required to maintain a laboratory book in preparation for a practical examination at the end of the AS course. (15% of the AS marks). In the A2 course there will either be another practical examination or internally assessed practical coursework.
Students will be required to purchase, either new or second-hand, a lab coat. There will also be opportunities to subscribe to “Chemistry Review”, to buy revision guides and to attend a Chemistry Revision Conference (cost - approximately £15).
Chemistry is an excellent starting point for most careers since it develops a wide range of academic skills. It is also a requirement for many medicinal or veterinary based careers.
